New Year, New Beginning – New Students Intake at the Faculty of Management at South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.
The inauguration programme for the new students of the Faculty of Management and Commerce of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka for the Academic Year 2024/2025 was held on 1 January 2026 at the A. R. Mansoor Memorial Auditorium located within the university premises.
The event was held under the leadership of the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Commerce, Professor A. M. M. Mustafa, with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. S. M. Junaideen, gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest and addressed to the newly admitted students.
In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the significance of students commencing their university life on the very first day of the year 2026, describing it as a memorable and meaningful moment. He stated that a new year symbolizes new hopes, new responsibilities, and new beginnings, and emphasized that an important chapter in the students’ lives begins from this day onwards.
He pointed out that gaining admission to the national university system is a rare privilege granted only to a limited number of capable students. Therefore, he urged the students to utilize this opportunity responsibly and wisely.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that university life may present various challenges, including academic demands, language barriers, financial difficulties, hostel-related issues, and adjusting to a new environment. However, he encouraged students to consider these challenges as opportunities for personal growth and resilience.
He further stressed that although not everything learned at the university may be directly applicable in one’s profession but qualities such as discipline, attitude, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and mindset would serve as lifelong assets.
With the distinction between school life and university life being emphasized, he reminded students that the freedom they enjoy at the university must be accompanied by responsibility. Regular attendance at lectures, adherence to university rules and regulations, respect for others, and avoidance of violence and misconduct were emphasized as fundamental duties of students.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that South Eastern University of Sri Lanka is a national university that equally represents all communities in the country. He encouraged students to embrace this multicultural environment with openness and mutual respect.
He warned that ragging is a serious criminal offence under Sri Lankan law and recalled that several tragic incidents have been taken up in courts. To prevent such incidents, the university has implemented student disciplinary regulations, which are published on the official university website.
In addition, he announced that student’s mental health helpline service would be introduced to safeguard students’ psychological well-being, and that further details would be communicated in due course.
In his remarks to parents and guardians, the Vice-Chancellor urged them to maintain continuous communication with students and to be attentive to signs of stress or behavioral changes. He also encouraged them to seek assistance from university authorities whenever issues arise.
He further stated that to date, South Eastern University of Sri Lanka has produced over 16,000 graduates, while the Faculty of Management and Commerce alone has produced approximately 5,000 undergraduates and over 100 postgraduate degree holders. These graduates are currently serving with distinction in both the public and private sectors, locally and internationally.
Although the university provides academic, sports, and basic infrastructure facilities, the Vice-Chancellor acknowledged that hostel accommodation remains a challenge. He noted that proposals have been submitted to the government to address this issue and requested students’ patience and cooperation during this period.
A key highlight of the event was the launch of the Undergraduate Guide for the Academic Year 2024/2025. This was followed by addresses from the Heads of Departments of the Faculty.
