Beyond being a significant personal academic achievement, this appointment represents an important milestone for women’s participation and advancement in the field of geology in Sri Lanka. Based on available historical records, Dr. Nayana Madurya Adikaram has earned the distinction of becoming Sri Lanka’s first female Professor of Geology.

Born on 29 February 1980 in Kegalle, Nayana Madurya Adikaram is the daughter of Gunaratne Banda and late Leela Gunaratne. Growing up in a family of five children, she demonstrated academic excellence and leadership qualities from an early age.

She received her school education at St. Joseph’s Girls’ College, Kegalle, where she actively participated in the school’s Western Band. During the 1998/1999 period, she also served as a school prefect, displaying leadership abilities alongside her academic talents.

Having successfully completed the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in 1999 at her first attempt, she entered the Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya, in 2000.

At Peradeniya, she pursued her passion for geology and graduated with a BSc Special Degree in Geology with First Class Honours. Her undergraduate research focused on “Geology, Structure and Drainage of Naketiya Landslide.”

From Academia to Engineering Geology

Following the completion of her undergraduate studies, she served as a Temporary Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya for one year.

She subsequently joined the Department of Irrigation as an Engineering Geologist attached to the Weheragala Dam Construction Project.

Working in the challenging environment close to Yala National Park became an important phase in her professional development. During her tenure on the Weheragala project, she was involved in geological investigations related to the foundation of the earth dam and other activities associated with dam construction.

This experience enabled her to combine theoretical geological knowledge with practical field experience, laying a strong foundation for her subsequent academic and research career.

In 2006, during a period when the country was experiencing severe conflict, she joined the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka as a Lecturer in Geology.

Travelling regularly from Kegalle to the southeastern region of the country presented considerable personal and professional challenges. Yet, these difficulties did not deter her from pursuing her academic career.

Instead, the challenges of the period strengthened her determination, resilience and commitment to higher education.

Her persistent efforts and academic achievements eventually opened the door to an important international opportunity.

She was awarded a full scholarship under the Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP), enabling her to pursue postgraduate studies at Saitama University in Japan.

Between 2009 and 2011, she studied in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Saitama University, completing a Master of Civil and Environmental Engineering specialising in Rock Mechanics, with an outstanding GPA of 4.00.

Her Master’s research was titled “Anisotropic Behavior of Tage Tuff in Changing Saturation.”

The academic and professional exposure she gained in Japan significantly enriched her knowledge and research capabilities. Upon returning to Sri Lanka, she brought that international experience back to the South Eastern University and continued her efforts to strengthen geological education and research.

One of the most significant contributions to her academic career has been her pioneering role in the introduction and development of the Honours Degree in Applied Geology at the South Eastern University.

She also served as the Coordinator of the Applied Geology Honours Degree during 2022–2023, contributing significantly to the development of geological education and the training of a new generation of graduates in applied geological sciences.

Continuing her academic journey, she completed her PhD in Earth Science in 2018 through the Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya.

Her doctoral research focused on the geochemistry and sedimentological characteristics of sediments along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, palaeoenvironmental conditions and coastal evolution.

Her research on the Batticaloa Lagoon, eastern coastal sediments and marine and coastal environments has contributed significantly to the understanding of geological and environmental processes in Sri Lanka.

Her research portfolio covers a wide range of subjects, including:

• Geochemistry of sediments in the Batticaloa Lagoon;

• Environmental risk assessment;

• Provenance of coastal sediments;

• Mineralogy;

• Heavy-metal contamination;

• Mangrove environments;

• Coastal evolution; and

• Sedimentary processes.

These areas demonstrate the breadth and multidisciplinary nature of her scientific interests.

Research has remained one of the defining pillars of Professor Nayana Madurya Adikaram,s academic career.

Her research has been published in several internationally recognised scientific journals, including Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Marine Pollution Bulletin, Regional Studies in Marine Science, International Journal of Sediment Research, Environmental Earth Sciences, and Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science.

Her body of research reflects a strong scientific interest in coastal sediments, minerals, geochemistry, environmental pollution, heavy metals, lagoon environments, mangrove ecosystems and coastal evolution.

Through these studies, she has contributed not only to geological knowledge but also to a better understanding of environmental challenges affecting Sri Lanka’s coastal and aquatic ecosystems.

Her achievements as a researcher have received recognition from the South Eastern University and other academic institutions.

In 2023, she received the Vice Chancellor’s Award and Medal for being the researcher with the highest number of indexed publications in the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

She has also received Senate Awards in 2021 and 2022 for research publications in high-impact journals.

Among her other notable recognitions are:

• Most Outstanding Young Researcher Award – 2019;

These awards reflect her sustained commitment to academic excellence, research and professional development.

Academic Leadership and Administrative Contributions

Professor Nayana Madurya Adikaram has also made significant contributions to the academic and administrative development of the South Eastern University.

From 2019 to 2022, she served as the Head of the Department of Physical Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences.

She has also held several important responsibilities, including:

• Director of the Research and Innovation Centre;

• Coordinator of the Applied Geology Honours Degree Programme;

• Coordinator of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell; and

• Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Science of the South Eastern University.

Her academic service extends beyond the university as well. She has served as a reviewer for internationally recognised journals, including Environmental Geochemistry and Health, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, and the Journal of the National Science Foundation.

Mentoring the Next Generation of Researchers

Professor Adikaram’s contribution to higher education goes beyond her own research achievements.

She has supervised the research work of MPhil, MSc and undergraduate students, guiding young researchers in diverse areas including mineral resources, coastal sediments, heavy-metal contamination, clay minerals, river sediments, gemstones and rare-earth elements.

Through this mentorship, she has played an important role in nurturing the next generation of researchers and strengthening research capacity in the geological sciences.

In 2010, she married Engineer I.U.B. Dissanayake.

Behind her long academic and research journey has been the continued support of her husband, which she has acknowledged as an important source of strength.

As a mother of three children, she has successfully balanced family responsibilities with the demands of university teaching, research, academic leadership and professional development.

Her ability to continue pursuing academic excellence while fulfilling her responsibilities as a mother and professional stands as another remarkable aspect of her life story.

According to the official appointment letter, her elevation was approved by the 304th Council Meeting of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka, and she has been appointed Professor in Geology (On Merit) with effect from 31 May 2023.

Her journey from a young girl born and raised in Kegalle, to a geology student at the University of Peradeniya, an engineering geologist involved in challenging fieldwork near Yala, and later an academic at the South Eastern University during one of the country’s most difficult periods, is a remarkable story of perseverance.

Her journey continued through postgraduate studies in Japan, doctoral research, internationally recognised publications, academic leadership, society work and the training of young researchers.

Today, she stands at the pinnacle of her academic career as Sri Lanka’s first female Professor of Geology, marking a historic achievement not only for herself but also for women in science and higher education in the country.

The life and career of Professor Nayana Madurya Adikaram offer a powerful example of how determination, education, research and perseverance can overcome even the most difficult circumstances.

Her journey demonstrates that challenges need not become barriers to success. Instead, with commitment and resilience, they can become stepping stones towards greater achievements.

From Kegalle to Peradeniya, from the demanding field conditions of Yala to the international academic environment of Japan, and from a young lecturer at the South Eastern University to the historic position of Professor in Geology, her career represents a remarkable story of dedication and achievement.
